Letter home

Dearest Julia,
I am forever grateful to not have attended the battles at Gettysburg. It has been made apparently clear that it was a bloodbath. It is shocking that we lost over twenty thousand men. The only positive of it is that we defeated Lee who lost over 28 thousand men. Without those troops from Maine they would of broken our flank god only knows how many lives would of been lost. I truly hope that I will return home soon but I fear that might not be possible for quite sometime.

With love
Ulysses
