letter home

Dearest Julia,
I am truly thankful to be alive right now. many of us here thought bull run was a guaranteed victory but we were wrong. the rebels showed up weak but they held us long enough for reinforcements to arrive. many congressman from Washington attended, but to their dismay it became an onslaught. i saw a few of our troops pickup nick knacks on the battlefield. i lost over 200 men today and the men who did return hung their heads in shame during the march back to Washington. many of the onlookers impede our path on the way back. president Lincoln is going to lose his head over this. based on this battle i can foresee this being more than a ninety days war.

                                                    With deepest regards,

                                                           Ulysses
